Lage Mierde Food Forest

Description

Since 2021, the Lage Mierde Food Forest Foundation has been creating an inspiring place on Beekakkersweg in Lage Mierde that connects people with nature and with one another, and that provides delicious, wholesome food. We do this in a sustainable and responsible manner. The Foundation, along with the Friends and volunteers of the Food Forest, work together to develop and manage the site. One of our goals is for the Lage Mierde Food Forest to increasingly become a community asset—a place where we can show our children where food comes from, and where we can work together to leave a legacy for future generations. It is a place to meet and inspire one another. It is a valuable addition to Lage Mierde and the surrounding area. We offer guided tours for interested visitors by appointment. It’s important to us that the plot is in a quiet location and borders the nature reserve. This allows the food forest to become part of the nature reserve, and the qualities of the forest are reflected in the food forest. In designing the food forest, we based our approach on two “rational” harvest circles and a “romantic forest.” In addition, we’ve created three ponds on the 2-hectare site to further increase biodiversity. We’ve also built a lovely gathering circle, which can be used for courses and other activities. Recently, we’ve added a “nursery” for growing trees and shrubs, as well as a herb garden. This initiative originated with the Lage Mierde village council. We collaborate with Maatschap Linschoten (the Doortjeshoeve organic farm). Our harvest is sent as harvest boxes to our “friends.” In addition, we are currently processing the small fruits into various jams. The harvest and the jams are also available for purchase at the Vershof in Lage Mierde and at the organic farm in Lage Mierde.
