Learn to understand how woody plants grow, and use that knowledge to make your decisions
In this two-day hands-on course, you will first learn to understand how shrubs and trees grow naturally. You will learn about the different types of buds and branches trees can have and how to read your trees and shrubs at this point.
Then you will learn how to determine your final image and when to prune what and when not to prune. And, how to go back to (almost) not pruning trees once pruned.
Finally, you will learn all about proper tools and how to maintain them.
The course consists of two teaching days, at two inspiring locations, where we also go outside on both days to apply the theory in practice. So bring your pruning tools with you!

March 3, 2027, De Koperwiek Nursery, Hazerswoude-Dorp
On this first day, Martin takes you into the concept of the tree and shrub. What do you actually see when you look at a tree? Where does growth begin and what kind of branches and buds does a woody plant have?
In the afternoon we go outside to put what we have learned into practice.
Maarten then gives you homework to work with in your own food forest or garden
The topics covered are:
- How does a natural tree grow?
- Different wishes of the administrator
- Crown Architecture: What Is It and How Do You Use It?
- The final image of your tree
- Different buds, branch types and branch positions
- The importance of the top
- How do you recognize fruiting branches?

March 17, 2027, Food Forest Thuishaven, Zeewolde
On this day Maarten teaches you all about the moments of intervention/pruning and about observing the effects of pruning and how you can base your choices on that. The question of how to get back to almost no pruning is also covered.
Also this day we will go outside in the afternoon to put what we have learned into practice.
- How does the rootstock affect the growth of the tree?
- When is the best time to prune?
- To prune or not to prune?
- What do you pay attention to while pruning?
- How can you get back to (almost) not pruning at all?
- What tools do you use when pruning?
