Create a plan for your food forest

Make your dream come true and figure out how to live from it

You've gotten all excited about food forests. You want to know all about it. Indeed, you want to make it your life. How do you do that? What do you run into. Or rather: what exactly do you dream? Do you have that sharp enough? And then, how do you work out such a plan? And also, if necessary, how do you get financing?

In this module, you will learn from six top experts in the fields of business model, network marketing and business organization how to combine biodiversity, food supply and multiple -also social- values into a really serious way to make a living.

This food forest planning module is perhaps the most intensive module of all. It teaches you what you actually want and what it takes to realize that plan. Think about legal forms, forms of financing, subsidies, regulations and -very importantly- building and using your network.

Perhaps the most important gift of this module:on the last day you will present your plan to a jury that can take your plan further. Financially, in terms of network and in any case with very meaningful feedback.

On top of the base

The food forest plan module is a real do-module, dealing very specifically with your dream. Marieke Karssen guides you during all five days of class and together with her you meet a different expert every day. On top of that, each day you will also be taught by Marieke about a different part of your plan each time.

Philosophical farmer Jan Huijgen of the Eemlandhoeve in Amersfoort teaches you about how many earning models one farm can have. Lawyer Liesbeth van Bemmel turned her life around several years ago and she tells how she is able to make a living from her still quite young food forest in the middle of the green heart of the Netherlands. Vincent Bogaart introduces you to the world of impact investors and its many legal forms. And finally, Frank de Gram of the Waalgaard takes you through his journey to a concept that started small but is now scalable and employs a whole team of people.

All teachers in this module assume that you already know the basics. It is not as important in this module that you already have it as in the design module, but experience shows that it is the best order. Especially since you already lay a foundation in that basic module. For example, learning to searching in map and regulatory systems and how to learn how to look at land. You can always do the design module later. For example, when you have your land. Read more about the basic module.

A do module

During this module you will work on your own plan. You will receive input and new theory from each teacher, which you can incorporate into your own plan in the following days. You present your plan on the last day to lecturers, fellow students and a jury of investors and experts who can help your plan -proven- to go further.

Three modules in annual training

For some projects, the knowledge from this module is more than enough to then continue with your own plan. But, this course has three modules for a reason. If you don't have the basics yet, we recommend you do that first. And, if you need design in addition to funding, you can also do the design module. As with the design module, this group is a bit smaller and the guidance is more personal and intense. Also, this module is guided by really the top people in the business.

So the year-long food forest training is modular to take, but in its entirety a complete journey toward your -often life-changing- plan. If you want to do the whole year training in 2023, you can start in May with the basics, continue with design in September and take this module in October, November and December.

Practical information

This module includes four live days and one online class day plus the necessary self-study and hands-on work. If you want to do this module well, it is smart to plan at least 4, but no less than 8 hours of self-study each time between classes. That way you'll get the most out of the course and the feedback you'll get from your presentation. You can also choose to do all that work later anyway, since all class days are recorded and you will continue to have access to this and all other course materials for years to come.

What do our students say about the Food Forest Plan module?

Follow the entire training course. For the content, the knowledge and the network.

Roel Willems
Documentary filmmaker and co-founder Food Forest Factory
A practical course that helps to make abstract plans tangible.

Timon Geresteijn
Cook at restaurant (and future food forest) de Dyck in Woubrugge
The pitches at the end of the series sharpen the preparation. Very useful. In addition, the last meeting contributes to the expansion of the network.

Joke Feenstra
co-founder of the Waalgaard
Very strong training. No vague stuff, but concrete tools to design, develop and operate a food forest. With practical examples, calculation models, investors and experts.

Gies Voorburg
Marketing expert at Merxe, bushcrafter and food forest builder
When in doubt, just do this course. You will get a lot of knowledge and inspiration that you can take further.
René Sytsma
Co-founder food forest L&R2
Very inspiring with a clear goal in mind; to give a pitch to a jury and other interested parties. I highly recommend this course!

In the morning, Marieke Karssen and Frank Gorter will take you on a journey to your dream. In the afternoon you will learn from none other than Jan Huijgen about the incredible number of business models that the Eemlandhoeve harbors. Marieke then introduces the basic documents of this module.

Vincent Bogaart is an impact investor and will teach you all about financing and legal forms and their characteristics. We are then guests of food forest Thuishaven where you can also learn from the diversity of revenue models active there. Marieke teaches about network marketing in the afternoon and teaches you how important network activation is for basically any kind of food forest.

Liesbeth van Bemmel of Food Forest Benthuizen is not only the living example of someone who has managed to make a living from and with her food forest, but she is also incredibly good at thinking like a grant writer/policy official and gives extremely valuable tips for any type of food forest.

The fourth day of classes is digital. In the morning, Frank de Gram of cooperative Arbres en de Waalgaard shares his story from student to entrepreneur with a team and a very practical food forest as well as a scalable concept. In the afternoon we share and discuss everyone's plans and budgets.

The final day of the course year takes place at Landgoed Grootstal in Nijmegen in front of a jury of investors who can really help to move your plan forward. In the two weeks beforehand, we will coach you individually towards the optimal final presentation, if necessary.
