Do you want to be able to make your own food forest plants?

In this course, you'll learn how to do just that!

Almost everyone who is serious about food forests wants to learn one day how to propagate plant material themselves. Not only because it saves costs, or because the supply from growers is scarce, but also to understand how nature works and how the so desired cultivars for food forests are created. In this course you not only learn the theory, but also practice how to propagate trees, shrubs and other planting material yourself.

This course is fully booked for this year. If you are interested, please fill out our contact form and we will be the first to notify you of next year's dates soon.

All techniques are covered, both theory and practice.

None other than foodboss Martijn Aalbrecht, takes you in three course days along all aspects of the propagation of woody species. Martijn helps more and more food forest owners on their way with their food forest, knows a lot about plants and plant propagation and is -not unimportantly- a gifted teacher.

The course is purposely spread over three seasons so that you not only learn which technique suits which seizone, but also how to care for your planting materials in the periods between course days.

You can choose to take the course on three Thursdays or on three Fridays (in two variations). Mixing is unfortunately not possible. The locations are at Martijn Aalbrecht in Hengelo, Voedselbos Thuishaven in Zeewolde and Landgoed Grootstal in Nijmegen.

In these three days of lessons, we give a lot of theory every day, but we will also actively practice. We provide all materials (knives, rootstocks, tape etc) and you will be taking cuttings, grafting and oculating, and taking care of the plants yourself.

We make recordings of the theoretical part of the lessons, so that you can always watch it again later.

At the end you are certainly not an accomplished grower, but you can do the simpler propagation methods just fine by yourself and you can continue practicing for the more complex techniques. People who want to continue as a professional grower after this course can certainly be helped further.

Martijn Aalbrecht offers this course exclusively through Food from the Forest.

More about the content

Day 1: Basic explanation of propagation and more in-depth on grafting

Location: At the Food Boss in Hengelo
You can choose to take the course on Thursdays or on two types of Fridays. For the first course day, these are the following dates: Thursday: 9-3-2023, Friday: 10-3-2023 or Friday: 17-3-2023

What techniques are all used to propagate plants and why do you apply them? We then go deeper into the theory of grafting. We discuss why many trees and shrubs are grafted and what the advantages and disadvantages of this are. We look at the different types of rootstocks and why there is so much diversity in rootstocks. You will also be explained what a scion is and how to harvest and store it.

In the afternoon you will get to work grafting trees yourself and you will get to graft two fruit trees to take home that day. At the end of the afternoon we will visit Martijn's food forest and see specifically if we can recognize the grafted trees and what this says about the tree.

Day 2: Sowing, laying off and summer cuttings

Location: Food Forest Thuishaven in Zeewolde
You can choose a course on Thursdays or on two types of Fridays. For the second course day, these are the following dates: Thursday: 8-6-2023, Friday: 9-6-2023 or Friday: 16-6-2023

This course is fully booked for this year. If you are interested, please fill out our contact form and we will be the first to notify you of next year's dates soon.

What are the different ways to sow perennial crops? You will learn different techniques such as stratification and scarification. What is the deposition of plants and with which species do you apply this technique? You will also learn all about summer cuttings. What is the summer cutting and what makes this way of cutting different from the winter cutting?

In addition, we look at the care of the grafted trees from the first lesson. Are the saplings established and how do you let them grow out in a good way?

In the afternoon Martijn will show all the theory in practice. Of course, we will also visit the food forest and specifically see the techniques discussed there in practice.

Day 3: Winter cuttings and oculating

Location: Landgoed Grootstal in Nijmegen
You can choose a course on Thursdays or on two types of Fridays. For the third course day these are the following dates: Thursday 5-10-2023, Friday 6-10-2023 and Friday 13-10-2023

This final day is about winter cuttings and oculating trees.
In the theory of winter cuttings you will learn the technique of collecting the right cutting materials. Which plants are suitable for winter cuttings, how to collect cutting wood and how to make the best cuttings. What are the advantages of a greenhouse and can you also take cuttings outdoors?
In addition, the theory of oculating is covered. What is grafting and what are the main differences? When to choose for grafting and when to graft?

In the afternoon you will work on oculating some of the trees yourself. Two fruit trees you can take home. At the end of the afternoon there is an excursion to the food forest where you will learn in practice the difference between grafted and oculated trees.

Just do it! And observe well! Dare to fail and be patient. Enjoy when you do succeed!
