Soil and (plant) health

Everything starts at the bottom (Day 1)

Location: At Martijn Aalbrecht's food forest in Hengelo.
Dates: May 1

Whatever innovative farming method you see, they all start with the soil. Regular crops deplete the soil, everyone agrees, and with method x or y or z you rebuild the soil. But, the confusing thing is, each method sees this differently, and more importantly does it differently. In regenerative agriculture, you often work with compost or animals, so you add something to the soil. In the food forest world, it's often common practice to do nothing at all and just "automulate. In the syntropic approach, things are different again, and within permaculture there are also different methods.

Before we choose any method, in this module we will mainly learn what exactly happens in the soil and what that means: healthy soil. We even go so far as to allow you, if you wish, to start analyzing your own soil as well.

We offer as an extra to this module that you can have your own soil analyzed at van Iersel and we will discuss those results during this course. Such an analysis costs € 195 and is outside the course fee, because not everyone already has their own soil or needs such an analysis. So it is optional. You will get all the information from us after you order the course

Dry clay soil

In the end, it's all about plant health (Day 2)

Location: At Martijn Aalbrecht's food forest in Hengelo.

Date: May 22

With all this focus on soil, you'd almost forget that it's actually about how to get healthy plants. And, behind that, of course, the question: what is the definition of a healthy plant?

We don't want to give anything away though, but this is where the course is going to give you key eye openers. Many people are so focused on worms and bugs in the soil that they almost forget that this is ultimately what it's all about.

You will learn in this course how a healthy plant differs from an unhealthy one and even about different stages of health. We'll also give you methodologies that you can practice with and apply in your own food forest. So, you'll also get answers to the question: how healthy are the plants in your food forest?

Just to get you off to a good start with this, we offer within this course a so-called brix or refractometer and a plant sap analysis. We learn to work with it on this day and then you can measure all your food and plants afterwards.

Young plantings in food forest Thuishaven

Coming full circle, as this is all food for humans (Day 3)

Location: Food Forest Thuishaven in Zeewolde
Date: June 5

When you let this knowledge about soils and plants sink in, a great new realization emerges: if soils are unhealthy, and so are the plants growing on them, what are we really eating? And, conversely, how valuable and nutrient-rich is food that comes from healthy soils?

In the last day of this module, we will go full circle and you will also work with what you have learned yourself. We will practice observing and interpreting and also incorporate the results you measured on your ground.

soil animals in a food forest

This three-day in-depth course costs 495,- excl. VAT and takes place on three Wednesdays in May-June. Each course day starts at 10 am and ends between 4:30 and 5. We provide coffee and tea, of course, and a tasty vegetarian/vegan lunch. In this course you will also get a plant sap analysis and a brix meter.

We offer you a digital course environment in which you can find the course material and many valuable links, but also recordings of the theoretical part of the three course days. Just to keep enough attention for everyone's situation, we make the group a maximum of 15 people, so don't wait too long to register.

In the email we send you after registration we also explain all about a soil test you can have done. You have to pay for this separately and send it in yourself, but if you do this in time, we can discuss the results on day 1. We did this on purpose, because there are always participants who don't have land yet or people who have already done extensive surveys. So, this is optional. Not having a soil survey done? No problem, you will be fine with others.

We deliver this course according to our terms of delivery. These are simple and clear, so please feel free to read them.

If you are unable to pay the course fee in one payment, or are with an organization that works with billing, please feel free to contact us
