The online platform of Association Food from the Forest

Welcome to the online platform of Food from the Forest - the place where knowledge, people and data around food forests come together. Here we learn from each other, share successes and work together to further grow the food forest movement.

The platform features several tools that can help you find your way in the food forest world. Parts like the food forest map, participants, the bulletin board and the knowledge base give a good idea of the movement and the knowledge available.

For beginning and advanced food forest farmers, we have developed tools such as the food forest monitoring tool, food forest themes and food forest recipes that can help you start and further develop the food forest.

Put your food forest on the map

Do you have a food forest of your own? Become a free participant on our platform and put your food forest on the map as well.

Participant overview

Get to know the faces behind the food forest movement. On our participants page, you'll find all the members of Food from the Forest - from pioneering food forest owners to enthusiastic volunteers. Find out who's participating, find who you're looking for and help build the movement.

Supply and demand

Have a question about pruning, or want to share an event? The message board features new posts daily. Members help each other with tips, share experiences and announce activities.

Members and participants may post bulletin board messages and may respond to others' messages.

Become a member to join the conversation.

Knowledge base

We want to create and collect as many quality knowledge articles as possible to share. The knowledge articles cover a variety of topics from regulations to health.

Most of the knowledge is available to everyone. For some articles, we ask you to become a member.

Tools for beginning and experienced food forest farmers

Do you own or manage a food forest? And do you want to know how much your forest yields, how biodiverse your forest is or how to make a real business plan? We have developed several tools to help food forest managers develop and grow. For most tools we ask you to create an account on the platform.

Food forest monitoring

Do you want to measure how well your food forest is (already) doing in terms of biodiversity, for example, or how much CO2 is being stored in it? Or do you want to know how much your forest yields economically?

Together with researchers at Wageningen University, we have developed a tool to monitor your food forest. The tool is set up in such a way that you can compare your forest with other food forests of the same age and soil type. This data is shared via an Open Data source with any researcher who wants to look into it. So while measuring, you are actively contributing to the global growth of knowledge about food forests!

Food forest themes

Stichting Voedselbosbouw has developed four food forest themes, namely Experience, Biodiversity, Gastronomy and Production. You can think of a theme as the basis by which you will design and set up the food forest.

For each topic we provide more information and offer plant lists and harvest calculations as downloads. Below that again, you can interactively make a calculation for your own country. To do this, create an account on this site or log in with the account you already have.

Food forest recipes

Several factors play a role in designing a food forest. The theme you want to get started with is an important one but also the soil type and water levels of the plot have a big influence on the plant list, for example.

So if you want to make your land more biodiverse but don't know where to start, check out the food forest recipes. Here you will find six recognizable landscapes and all the inspiration you need including an instructional video on how to use the tool.

Budgeting for food forests

How to make a solid budget for a food forest.

To help you do this, we have developed a budgeting tool that you can request for free and get started on your own.

The page has more explanation and a short instructional video.

Open data source

Transparency and research are important to us. We share all the data we collect through monitoring (anonymized) through an open data source. This way everyone - from scientists to policy makers - can watch and learn from the results.

Thanks to this open data, together we are building evidence of the impact of food forests on biodiversity, climate and harvest. Anyone can access and use the data, further professionalizing the food forest movement.

Food from the Forest is growing!

Our goal is to grow the movement and, by 2050, have ten percent of the agricultural land in the Netherlands consisting of food forests that can be considered ecologically, socially and economically successful. With the Association Food from the Forest , we want to help realize this vision. Our online platform plays an important role in this. Here the movement gets in touch with each other and we share knowledge and tools needed to grow further. And it's working. More and more food forests and members are joining us and more and more acres of food forest are being realized.
