Four Food Forest themes and their substantiation

The Dutch Stichting Voedselbosbouw developed four food forest themes in 2018 for the Welna estate, but these are also interesting for other food forests. You can see them below. If you click on the themes you will get more information. Under each theme, but also at the bottom of this page, you can download the plant lists and harvest calculations for all themes. Below you can make a business case calculation for your own land. Create an account on this site or log in with the account you already have.

Biodiversity theme

In this themed area, the primary focuses are on natural values and increasing biodiversity.

Experience theme

This area will be a recreational food forest where people can reconnect with the origin of food.

Volume production theme

In this food forest, practical food production is central. This forest will not be very romantic, but shows a very healthy revenue model.

Gastronomy theme

This area is partially volume-producing, but on a smaller scale and with a more romantic design. Concerning income, this is the most versatile revenue model.

Working out the four themes for your business plan

The online business case tool is filled with the data from Landgoed Welna, including the plant lists. However, you can adjust that data to the size and wishes of your land.

In order to avoid best-case scenarios that, we have added 25% to the costs in the online tool for the biodiversity theme and deducted 25% of the revenues from the experience theme. For the high-performing themes, we increased  the costs by 25%. If you want to know more about how we got to our figures, download the Excels for Welna.

Get started

We built a tool that allows you to create a pretty nice custom business report based on your own environment. This can serve as a conversation starter for your own supporters, family, investers, etc.

Of course, this is just the beginning.  The models are based on assumptions and the plant list consists of plants that do well in sandy soil. But every year more data will come in and all of your data will count. So help us improve this model and make it more beautiful and accurate. Have fun.
